London: Henry Hills, for John Rothwell, Joshua Kirton, and Richard Tomlins, 1657.

First edition thus. Folio. Two volumes. Leaf size is approximately 11 x 6 ¾ inches.

This is the renowned and influential English translation of both the text and the notes of the famous Dutch Bible of 1637, the preparation of which had been ordered by the Synod of Dort.

In the “Attestation” the translator, Theodore Haak (1605-1690), is described as “a learned gentleman… every way fitted for suck a task, he be ing by birth and breeding a German, about twenty years conversant in England, where not only his faithfulness is known in divers publick Employments, but his Dexterity also in Translating divers English Books of Practical Divinity into the German tongue…”

Haak executed this work at the request of the Westminster Assembly of Divines.

The annotations are enclosed within brackets and mingled with the text. With Arguments, Prefaces, etc. The prelims include a Dedication to the Lord Protector

Some expected soiling, staining, wear, etc. but overall a very nice copy of an important Interregnum printing of the Reformation Bible, quite significant in the social and political history o f this volatile period.

Full leather binding, slightly worn.

Please Note:  This is a low-resolution photo, which shows the format, but makes reading the text nearly impossible.  In reality, the text of these Bibles is large enough and clear enough to read very easily.
