GREATSITE.COM Presents ![]() King James Bible - The Vinegar Bible The Holy Bible. Oxford: Printed by John Baskett, 1717 Huge folio. 19.5 x 12.75 x 4.5 inches. One of the most magnificent English Bibles ever printed, though marred by quite a few errors – the one in the headline of Luke 20 giving this edition its nickname -- “The Parable of the Vinegar” (for Vineyard). Collates complete. Engraved title-page Variant B mounted, repaired with some loss. Printed title-page also mounted. Engraved initials and head- and tail-pieces. Some repairs and very minor soiling – e.g. “Proper Lessons” and Kalendar extended, repaired; leaf E1 bearing Genesis 50 with old amateurish repair and manuscript replacement of lost text; similar but smaller repair on Z3, I Samuel 13; first few leaves of NT repaired, with som e text affected but not lost; also second leaf of Romans. Other occasional tears/repairs and extending. Some light staining but overall, a fresh lovely copy in a suberb, imposing binding of full reversed old calf with full metal furniture and clasps (clasps partially perished). Rare and highly desirable. Herbert #943 with variant B (no priority) of additional general title dated 1716.
Please Note: This is a low-resolution photo, which shows the format, but makes reading the text nearly impossible. In reality, the text of these Bibles is large enough and clear enough to read very easily.
