Ancient Bible

True 1638 King James Bible Folio
First Cambridge Edition

[Bible in English.] The Holy Bible… Cambridge; Tho: Buck and Roger Daniel [1638].

“The authentique corrected Cambridge Bible, revised Mandato Regio, by the learned Doctor Ward, Doctor Goad of Hadley, Mr. Boyse, Mr. Mead, &c, and printed by the elaborate industry of Thomas Buck, Esquire and Mr. Roger Daniel in folio in 1638” (William Kilburne’s tract Dangerous Errors in Several Late Printed Bibles… 1659, reprinted in the Introduction to Loftie’s Century of Bibles, 1872, p. 35).

“In this edition, thus favorably noticed by Kilburne, the work of correction that was begun in the Cambridge 1629 Bible was carried further. The revisers took special car e to render uniform the use of italics” (Herbert, p. 176).

This remained the standard text until the 1762 publication of Dr. Paris and Dr. Therhold’s Cambridge Bible.

Complete. Engraved general title (as a singleton, or perhaps a bifolium with the blank excised); A-Z6, Aa-Zz6, Aaa-Ggg6, Hhh4, Iii4, Kkk-Xxx6, Yyy4, A-R6. Has “ye” at Acts 6:3.

A few tiny burn holes; the occasional small stain or light soiling; occasional short tear or repair, mostly marginal (leaf O[1] in NT a little into text); over-opened at Zz; notable ink stain in gutter of Yy[1] and2. That said, overall, this is a very fresh and lovely copy, evenly ruled in red throughout. Very comfortably margined; a tall copy (14 ¾ inches tall). Literally as nice a copy of this edition as one could desire.

Old plain calf binding, marbled endpapers (likely late 18 th century); worn at extremities but sound and attractive and most suitable.

Herbert 520. Norton, David, A Textual History of The King James Bible, Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2005, pp. 89-94. DM403. STC 2331.

Please Note:  This is a low-resolution photo, which shows the format, but makes reading the text nearly impossible.  In reality, the text of these Bibles is large enough and clear enough to read very easily.
