Ancient Bible

The Oxford Standard Edition

Edited by Dr. Benjamin Blayney:
The Standard King James Version
until the late 19th Century

[Bible in English.] The Holy Bible, Containing the Old and New Testaments: Translated out of The Original Tongues: And with the Former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised, By His Majesty’s Special Command. Appointed to be read in Churches. Oxford: Printed by T. Wright and W. Gill, Printers to the University: And sold by S. Crowder, in Paternoster Row, London; and by W. Jackson, in Oxford. 1772. [NT:] The New Testament of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, Translated out of the Original Greek: and with the former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised, By His Majesty’s Special Command. Appointed to be read in Churches. Oxford: Printed by T. Wright and W. Gill, Printers to the University: Sold by S. Crowder, in Paternoster Row, London; and by W. Jackson, in Oxford, 1777.

An early reprinting of the 1769 Oxford Standard Edition: “… carefully revised by Dr. Benjamin Blayney of Hertford College, following the lines of Dr. Paris’ Cambridge edition of 1762 (No. 1142). Blayney quietly incorporated most of Paris’ improvements, increased his marginalia, and repeated not a few of his errors. For a critical examination of the work of these two editors, Paris and Blayney, ‘the great modernizers of the diction of the version, from what it was left in the seventeenth century, to the state wherein it appears in modern Bibles,’ see Scrivener, The Authorized Edition … (1884) pp. 28-35” –Herbert, Historical Catalogue of Printed Editions of The English Bible 1525-1951, London and New York, 1968.

Complete per collations at Hebert 1196, 1220, and 1254.

Slightly toned.

Lovely full dark green crushed morocco, gilt extra. Red morocco spine label and board onlays. Marbled endpapers.

A very pleasing copy of an important revision: arguably the most important between the first edition of 1611 and the revisions of 1877-1885.

Book is over-opened at Lamentations, with head- and tail-band split and spine with a visible crack but sound.

Extensive family notes in fine handwriting on some inserted blanks between the Old Testament and the Apocrypha (including a nice amateur watercolor family tree) and more at back.

Herbert 1220 [OT] and 1254 [NT]

Please Note:  This is a low-resolution photo, which shows the format, but makes reading the text nearly impossible.  In reality, the text of these Bibles is large enough and clear enough to read very easily.
