1701 Illustrated Bible Stories The translator and editor of this classic masterwork was Nicholas Fontaine
(1625-1709). He was arrested and thrown in the French Bastille prison for the crime
of promoting a Protestant understanding of the doctrine of grace, and rejecting Roman Catholic theology. While in prison, he translated and compiled this famous treasure of scholarship and artwork under the assumed name “Sieur De Royaumont.” This is the earliest English language “condensed Bible” of its kind, and the earliest publication to contain such a glorious and huge collection of Biblical woodcut illustrations. We are proud to be the ones to bring this stunningly beautiful and historically important work back into print for the first time in over three centuries, (in much the same way as we also did for Foxe’s Book of Martyrs). In addition to the first few hundred pages, which are formatted like a “Reader’s Digest Condensed Version of the Bible” with full- page illustrations on almost every-other- page, and super-large print text on the other side of the page; this scholarly work also includes a nearly 200 page double-appendix detailing the lives of the Apostles in part one, and the chronology of the Bible in part two. You can spend hours pouring over the amazing detail in the hundreds of ancient woodcut illustrations, showing the Garden of Eden, Noah’s Ark, The Parting of the Red Sea, The Prophets, The Apostles, The Nativity, The Miracles, The Last Supper, The Crucifixion, The Resurrection, The Ascension, The Apocalypse… and hundreds more. We have given you more than twenty examples of the nearly 250 glorious works of ancient art contained in this book at the bottom of this page; just click on any of the small images for an enlargement in a separate window. This facsimile reproduction is very tall and heavy, measuring approximately 16.5 inches tall by 11.5 inches wide by 2.5 inches thick, and printed on premium-stock acid-free cream paper. The binding is hardcover burgundy-brown bonded leather with gold stamping along the spine. Whether this magnum opus of Biblical artwork is destined to become part of your own library, or being given as an unforgettable gift for someone special; you can be sure that from the moment the cover is first opened, it will solicit a reaction of awe and reverence. We think you will agree that this is the most beautiful book printed in the 1700's. |
